On Wednesday, 12 October, Somerset College had its annual home match against Dirkie Uys High School from Moorreesburg. This fixture is played twice a year. In the first term the College travelled to the Swartland to play the match on the courts of Dirkie Uys High School.
The match was played with 8 boys and 8 girls in each of the teams. The College was represented by Jacques Morris, Joshua Putterill, Matthew Durie, Sam Henderson, Jonathan van Druten, Alex Brody, Nicholas de Waal, Nicholas Ficinus, Vanessa Chigariro, Kiera van Eeden, Olivia Fauël, Rebecca Brody, Alex Williams, Alex Dickson, Carli van der Westhuizen and Suzannah Nicolle.
The College’s girls played extremely well to win six of the eight singles matches and two of the four doubles matches. The girls, therefore, beat Dirkie Uys 8-4. Well done, especially to Vanessa Chigariro, Kiera van Eeden, Olivia Fauël, Rebecca Brody and Alex Williams for scoring convincing victories in their singles.
The boys were not as successful, losing all their singles matches except for Jonathan van Druten who scored a convincing 6-2 win playing at number five. In the doubles matches the College boys also found their opponents too tough and they lost the doubles 0-4.
The mixed doubles produced some very good matches with some close scores. Jacques Morris and Vanessa Chigariro won their mixed doubles 6-0 and Sam Henderson and Rebecca Brody played excellent tennis to win their match 6-2.
Final result: Dirkie Uys 21 matches and Somerset College 11 matches.
