Somerset College took part in the St Mary’s Waverley tennis festival from 12 to 14 February. The team consisted of Kiera van Eeden (Captain), Olivia Fauël, Rebecca Brody, Tegan O’Grady and Annalie Swanepoel.
The EIGHT schools that were invited to the festival were St Mary’s Waverley, St Mary’s Kloof, St Andrews JHB, Menlo Park, Pretoria Girls, Northcliff, Wykeham Collegiate and us.
In our pool we lost to St Mary’s Waverley, Wykeham Collegiate and Northcliff. Our match against Northcliff was even in matches and unfortunately they had more games than us. That left us bottom of our pool. We then cross-pooled against St Andrews losing that match despite some close matches. We finally played Pretoria Girls in a close match for 7th/8th position.
The tennis at the festival was of a very high standard, and with many ranked players in the country we were up against tough competition. Kiera van Eeden and Olivia Fauël playing at 1 and 2 held their own against these players. Rebecca Brody had an excellent tournament winning 3 out of her 5 singles matches and, together with Annalie Swanepoel, won 2 out of their 3 doubles matches played together. Annalie also won 1 out 2 of her singles matches played and Tegan O’Grady won 1 out 3 of her singles matches played.
A special mention must be made of Kiera van Eeden who at the final dinner was awarded best sportsmanship.
The final positions were as follows:
- St Mary’s Waverley
- Menlo Park
- St Mary’s Kloof
- Wykeham Collegiate
- St Andrews Girls
- Pretoria Girls
