Somerset College participated in the St Mary’s Waverley Tennis Festival from 16 to 18 February. The team consisted of Rebecca Brody, Annalie Swanepoel, Tegan O’Grady, Olivia Fauël (Captain), and Alex Williams.
The eight schools that participated in the festival were St Mary’s Waverley, St Mary’s Kloof, St Andrews JHB, Menlo Park, Pretoria Girls, St Cyprians, Wykeham Collegiate and Somerset College. In our pool matches, we lost to Menlo Park and narrowly to St Cyprian’s as we were even on matches, but they had more games than we did. We won our last match against Pretoria Girls. We then cross-pooled against Wykeham Collegiate winning that match. We then played St Andrews for fifth/sixth position. We lost the match, which left us in sixth position.
The tennis at the festival was of a very high standard. Rebecca Brody had an excellent tournament winning two out of her five singles matches and, together with Annalie Swanepoel, won three out of their five doubles matches played together. Annalie also had an excellent tournament winning three out of her five singles matches at no two. Tegan O’Grady won two out five of her singles and doubles matches played. Olivia Fauël and Alex Williams also contributed by winning some of their singles and doubles matches.
Alex Williams received the prize for best sportsmanship.
