Tennis (1st Boys & Girls) report – Dirkie Uys Tennis Tournament

On Friday, 31 August and Saturday, 1 September, Somerset College competed in the annual Dirkie Uys Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament which took place in Moorreesburg. This is a gruelling and extremely competitive tournament during which time three matches are played on Friday two matches are played on Saturday. Play started at 7.00 in the morning with very little rest between the fixtures. The following players represented Somerset College at this tournament:

Jonathan van Druten (captain) and Rebecca Brody (captain)

Alex Brody and Annalie Swanepoel

Liam Watson and Sharlene Chigariro

Lennard Fauël and Emily Reschke

Sean Irwin and Nicola Goudvis

Michael Atkinson and Kira Curtin

On Day 1 of the tournament, Somerset College performed very well by winning all three of their fixtures. We had convincing victories over Bredasdorp High School and Hermanus High School and a very close encounter against Charlie Hofmeyer from Ceres.

On Saturday, we lost our first fixture of the day against Durbanville High School who were the eventual winners of the tournament. The most exciting match was probably our last fixture against D.F. Malan from Bellville. Although we drew this match in the number of games (30 games each), our opponents had secured one more match win than us which handed them the victory. But by this time, we had accumulated enough points to put us at the top of our pool which secured us the second place at the tournament – our best result since we started our participation in the tournament five years ago.
