T20 Cricket Festival

The annual Somerset College T20 was held on Sunday 15  February with Wynberg, Rondebosch and Paul Roos joining Somerset College as participants.

The first fixtures were College against neighbours Paul Roos and Rondebosch took on Wynberg.

Somerset College batted first and scored a sedate 118 for 6 in their 20 overs, captain Phillip Carstens kept the scoreboard ticking over with a run a ball 54 not out. Under some disciplined, accurate bowling Paul Roos were restricted to 113 for 8. Somerset College won by 5 runs and moved on to the final.

In the other playoff game Wynberg scored 160 for 8, Kyle Verreynne top scored with 56 not out and Daniel Moriarty bowled a very good 4 over spell of 3 wickets for 8 runs. Rondebosch started off slowly but got going around the middle overs passing Wynberg’s score with 4 wickets down, Murray Commins, Daayyaan Galiem and Gavin Kaplan all amongst the runs.

In the 3rd /4th playoff game Wynberg played Paul Roos. Wynberg batted first and the fireworks started from the first over, Kyle Verreyne scored a magnificent 155 not out off 61 balls and was ably assisted by Tristan de Beer who scored 70. Wynberg got to a mammoth 272 for 3. Paul Roos tried their best and with an equally quick knock of 90 by Jaco van der Walt Paul roos finished on 216 for 9, thus losing by 56 runs.

In the final, Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat first. After some tight bowling and sharp fielding Rondebosch   scored 133 for 5 wickets, Murray Commins scored 56 and Gavin Kaplan 44. In their chase Somerset College came up against some accurate spin bowling and some fierce fast bowling to be 39 for 4 after 9 overs. Franco Carstens and William Sendin increased the run rate with a partnership of 52 runs to get Somerset College close. Man of the match, Franco Carstens, with a quick-fire 73 off 49 balls managed to steer Somerset College past the Rondebosch total with 6 wickets down.

This is the first time Somerset College has won this festival.
