On Saturday 5 March Vera Smit and Daniel Shuttleworth attended a workshop to prepare them for an inter-schools quiz in April.
The quiz is organised by the South African Institute for International Affairs and brings together about fifty schools from the Cape Town area. The teams have to read the Cape Times for a certain period of time (usually ten days), focusing on South Africa’s relationships with other countries. Twenty questions are asked, some counting up to seven points for specific facts regarding a particular topic, and the top schools receive special prizes. The winning school’s team is taken to Johannesburg for a weekend to attend a special conference for developing leadership among the youth. Somerset College has been taking part since 2013.
To prepare schools entering for the first time, or teams with mostly new members, this workshop was held at Bishops. Vera and Daniel are only two members of the College team; therefore they joined up with another incomplete team, the students from Makupula High in Stellenbosch. They found the cooperation quite exciting, and in the practice quiz this combined team was placed third.
The 2016 quiz will take place on 26 April at Bishops. Anyone interested in supporting our team must speak to Mr Walters about attending.
