The 27 new Mandela Rhodes Scholars selected at the final interviews in Cape Town in October 2012, bring to 201 the total number of Scholarships awarded since the programme was launched in 2004.
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships aim to help in building leadership excellence in Africa. It is more than a bursary, though the costs of scholars are generously covered during their period of study.
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation offers young Africans who exhibit academic prowess as well as broader leadership potential an educational opportunity unique on the continent. While pursuing their chosen post-graduate degree, each scholar benefits from access to leadership development programmes, rooted in the principles underpinning the Foundation. “We have had our first leadership workshop at the end of January. It was a 4 day intensive leadership workshop held at Lagoon Beach Hotel. Was a wonderful experience meeting talented scholars with such strong leadership and humanitarian qualities. Such a humble group of individuals who strive to make a difference in their communities. It was a very humbling and inspiring weekend.
We all got very excited to see our names and photos on the wall on the MRF building. Felt as if we were history in the making!
I’m hoping to meet Mandela (the previous cohorts have had this privilege) although he is very frail. So I will have to wait and see what will emerge at the celebrations.
It is amazing to meet and be surrounded by influential people who shaped and continue to shape our country.” (Marcelle)
