Somerset College’s top twelve tennis players participated in the Dirkie Uys Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament from Thursday 1 September to Saturday 3 September. This tournament is an annual event on the College’s tennis calendar and takes place in Moorreesburg in the Swartland. This year the College competed at the tournament for the fourth time and managed to finish in 4th position out of a total of eight participating schools. The tournament was won by host school, Dirkie Uys, who narrowly beat Hugenote High School from Wellington in a tense and very closely contested final match.
The players representing the College at the tournament were: Vanessa Chigariro, Kiera van Eeden (captain), Olivia Fauël, Rebecca Brody, Tegan O’Grady, Annalie Swanepoel, Jacques Morris, Clive Nicolle (captain), Joshua Putterill, Matthew Brodie, Jonathan van Druten and Alex Brody.
The structure of this tournament emphasises the importance of a team effort as points are awarded for every single match that is played. Boys’ and girls’ doubles are played first and these matches are followed by the mixed doubles.
The Somerset College girls played sparkling tennis, winning all their matches and ending as the only unbeaten girls’ team at the tournament. The boys were not as successful in their doubles’ matches, but in the mixed doubles, together with the girls, they scored victories when it mattered.
The final positions of the participating teams were:
1. Dirkie Uys High School
2. Hugenote High School
3. Durbanville High School
4. Somerset College
5. Hermanus High School
6. D.F. Malan High School
7. Bredasdorp High School
8. Vredendal High School
