Somerset College participated in the St Mary’s Waverley Tennis Festival from 16 to 18 February. The team consisted of Rebecca Brody, Annalie Swanepoel, Tegan O’Grady, Olivia Fauël (Captain), and Alex Williams. The eight schools that participated in the festival were St Mary’s Waverley, St Mary’s Kloof, St Andrews JHB, Menlo Park, Pretoria Girls, St Cyprians, Wykeham Collegiate and Somerset College. Sport for rest of term one and winter seasons Summer sport will end on the weekend of 3, 4 March. This decision was made due to the condition of the fields, lack of a pool and giving winter sporting codes the opportunity to train in the afternoon instead of in the morning before school. We will still play tennis, water polo and cricket matches during the week leading up to 10 March. All our Somerset College Cricket teams played against Paarl Boys High this past Saturday. The 1st XI and U15 teams played at Somerset College while the 2nd XI and U14 teams played at Paarl Boys High in Paarl. Somerset College’s second girls’ team scored a 4-2 win over Parel Vallei on Friday afternoon on our courts. The star of this victory was Sharlene Chigariro who played at number one and was the only player to win both her singles and doubles. Paul Roos Gymnasium illustrated their depth and strength in tennis when their third and fourth teams beat Somerset College’s first and second boys’ tennis teams on our courts in the Boland Central league fixtures on Friday afternoon. We were unable to secure any victories and both our teams lost 6-0.
