AFRIKAANS DEBATES AT THE WOORDFEES

The popular Woordfees in Stellenbosch has a special programme for young people. Part of this is a day of debating. Somerset College has taken part since its inception in 2010, winning the “Nuwe besems” (new brooms) category in 2011. As a result, we have been placed in the more experienced categories in the years to follow.

For the first time since the 2010 debates, the team was completely new. Vera Smit, Jaihne Magerman and Yanti de Villiers have never spoken in public debates before, let alone ones in Afrikaans. They were therefore placed in the “Nuwe besems” category again. After two round-robin debates (against teams from Schoonspruit and Gansbaai), they were announced as semi-finalists. They were victorious there as well, and ended up in the final, again against Schoonspruit. In the end Schoonspruit pipped them to the post, but still it was an exciting day. They discussed topics as wide-ranging as junk food and university fees.

The photograph shows Jaihne, Vera and Yanti in the Arts Building of the University of Stellenbosch, where the debates were held.
