Acorn Bursary Trust

The Acorn Bursary Trust (ABT) aims to bring Somerset College's education excellence to deserving candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds.  The Trust manages donations made in this regard.

The Trust is a registered Public Benefit Organization, and donation receipts are issued in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. Furthermore, donations to the Trust fulfil the requirements of “Socio Economic Development Contributions” as defined in the B-BBEE Codes.

Six trustees act as custodians of the Trust.  A number of these are well-known professionals, volunteering their financial expertise to its development.  The Trust is building a capital fund to support current and new bursary students over a period of five years.  It benefits from regular contributions by many Somerset College parents, alumni and staff.

The appointed trustees are:
Mr Johan Holtzhausen (Chairperson)
Mr Enrico Greyling (Governor)
Mr Robert Goff (Governor)
Mr Graham Sayer (Executive Head)
Mr Heine Matthee (Business Manager)
Ms Meg Fargher

We are most grateful for the support from parents, staff  and alumni.  However we require additional assistance to enable us to make a meaningful difference for more students through their five years of senior schooling.

One institution which currently supports students is the Student Scholarship Programme (SSP).  Somerset College is delighted to have been selected as the first Western Cape Partner School and the first co-sponsored students were placed in Somerset College in January 2014.  Details of the organisation are available at

The Trust aims to increase its available funding by encouraging businesses and individuals to make contributions.  Donors are encouraged to consider single donations, regular contributions or full funding for a student.

Somerset College and the Acorn Bursary Trust are well positioned to make a meaningful difference in our community and to contribute towards the development of future leaders.

Three wonderful students have been awarded a Pioneer Foods Education Trust Scholarship to attend Somerset College in 2016 for five years.  The Acorn Bursary Trust (ABT) has partnered with the generosity of Pioneer Foods Education Trust to provide tuition and boarding to three academically capable, strong characters who are going to make a meaningful mark on this country in the future.  Somerset College is well placed to provide a platform for these students to flourish. Selected from a number of applicants, the College is delighted to have selected three remarkable young people to be part of our school on account of their many attributes. Somerset College is also proud to partner with a forward thinking, dynamic organization that believes in the value of excellent education.

ABT: Founded by the community, funded by the community, for the benefit of the community.
