Established by the parents and staff of Somerset College, the Acorn Bursary Trust (ABT) is a registered Public Benefit Organisation that believes education is the greatest form of empowerment.

Through the building of a capital fund to support current and new bursary students for their full five years of high school, the ABT has brought the excellence of Somerset College education to deserving candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds for over 10 years.

As a living expression of our school values of dignity, aspiration, creativity and contribution, the ABT represents our commitment to make a real, valued and significant difference in our community and country. The ABT is also best positioned to open the opportunity for students to flourish as part of one of the top independent, co-educational schools in South Africa, with Somerset College graduates achieving among the best in the country, and the world, through our IEB and Cambridge curriculums. Through our educational excellence, the ABT is inspired to continue to secure funding that will further our empowerment of future leaders and expand new horizons of possibility.

Eight trustees act as custodians of the non-profit trust. From all spheres of the Somerset College community, including educators, corporate professionals and business leaders, the trustees volunteer their time and financial expertise. Moreover, donations to the Trust fulfil the requirements of “Socio Economic Development Contributions” as defined in the B-BBEE Codes and donation receipts are issued in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. As such, the ABT presents an exceptional opportunity for the entire Somerset College community to contribute towards the building of aspirational futures, whether as an individual or a multi-national corporation, with a single donation or a longer term pledge commitment.

With many confident and aspirational students graduating through the ABT, as both proud alumni and future leaders, we are exceptionally grateful to our generous donors who enable the trust to offer a relevant and future-focused education to our students and in so doing make a profound contribution to society.
