Boarding

Boarding allows for excellent personal growth, social integration and the development of neatness, punctuality and respect, as well as an appreciation for the caring nature that has become synonymous with Somerset College.

Most of these students are weekly boarders from the Western Cape, but some students from southern African and overseas countries such as Botswana, Namibia and Germany board at the College full time. With 56 girls resident in Founders’ House, and 60 boys in Vineyard House.

The two staff Heads of Houses live on campus in a house separate from the boarding houses and are responsible for the care and well being of the students they oversee. A disciplined approach is adhered to and students are encouraged to enjoy themselves within the parameters of what is considered acceptable behaviour. The Heads of Houses are assisted by Boarding House Assistants, who are either members of staff or mature university students who live at the College and manage the day-to-day running of the houses.

Junior Boarders
Junior boarders (Grades 8 and 9) are assigned cubicles for two in an eight to ten-bed dormitory.

Senior Boarders
Senior boarders (Grades 10, 11 and 12) are given rooms for two with a bathroom shared between four students.

Facilities
Each house has a well-equipped common room with facilities for recreational games, a small kitchen area and a television. Boarders bring their own bedding in order to create a more homely environment, and are responsible for keeping their cubicles and rooms tidy.

Founders’ House is also home to the resident Nursing Sister, whose responsibility is to care for students who are ill. The boarding establishment has a small clinic with four beds in it for this purpose.

All meals for boarders are provided in the dining room and catering is managed by our own team of professional caterers.

Each member of the boarding house staff is committed to supporting the students and engendering an atmosphere in which every student feels comfortable and cared for.
